By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, OCT. 13. Indian Airlines is all set to go ahead with its Rs. 10,000 crore proposal to buy 43 aircraft from the European consortium, Airbus Industrie. At the 74th meeting of the Indian Airlines Board of Directors here today, it was decided to recommend to the Civil Aviation Ministry that the proposal to acquire 43 aircraft "does not need to be revisited.''

The board also recommended that expeditious steps be taken to get the approval of the Public Investment Board for the fleet acquisition, pending for the past one year.

The board, at its last meeting, decided to take nine wide-bodied aircraft on lease, keeping in view the possibility of restructuring or opening up of new routes on international sectors.

The board approved the implementation of cargo automation. It would introduce customer friendly procedures in line with the expectations of the industry, and avoid delays and mishandling. On an average, Indian Airlines carries 350 tonnes of cargo, including courier material daily.
