SSLC examination on March 9
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
OCT. 13.
The SSLC examination for the academic year 2004-2005 has been scheduled to begin on March 9, 2005. Students in the regular stream will be required to appear for the examination as per the revised scheme, comprising the newly introduced examination system as well as the grading process. Candidates in all the other categories will have to appear under the old scheme that was in vogue till 2003-2004. Application forms and examination fees should be submitted at the centre concerned between October 20 and 29. Headmasters have been directed to collect a sum of Rs. 15 from each student towards the cost of the SSLC card.
Loans for rainwater harvesting
The Government has asked cooperative societies to provide loans for rainwater harvesting schemes and digging of wells under the 100 Days' Action Plan. The Registrar of Cooperative Societies today directed the societies to fix a ceiling and extend loans from their own funds or through cooperative institutions in the upper tier to members on the basis of plans and estimates prepared by authorised agencies. He also asked the societies to publicise the matter among those concerned including their members.
Assistance for burn victim
The Government has sanctioned an assistance of Rs. 50,000 to Ms. Mercy, the burn victim who was allegedly molested while being given bath during her treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. The assistance is being given from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The action has been taken on the basis of the recommendation of the State Human Rights Commission.
Review meeting
The Union Minister of State for Planning, M. V. Rajasekharan, reviewed the implementation of the Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana, a cent per cent centrally assisted scheme, at a meeting held at the office of the State Planning Board at Thiruvananthapuram today. The meeting was attended by V. Ramachandran, vice-chairman and S. M. Vijayanand, secretary of the Planning Board. The latter told the meeting that of the Rs. 90 crores sanctioned for the programme, Rs 22.5 crores had been received so far. It was meant for implementing projects that would boost agricultural productivity and alleviate poverty in the districts of Palakkad and Wayanad. The project period was three years. The Union Minister would visit Palakkad tomorrow and hold discussions with the president of the District Panchayat, people's representatives and district level officials on the decentralisation of projects. He would undertake field visits to Erumayoor and Vadakarapathy grama panchayats.
KSEB sub-station
A new 33 kV sub-station of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will be commissioned at Meenangadi in Wayanad district tomorrow. The installation, which cost Rs. 15.67 crores, would help improve the voltage position in Meenangadi, Poothadi, Muttil, Ambalavayal, Meppadi and adjoining villages, the KSEB said in a press release. It would also reduce the transmission loss in the area by 17.8 million units of electricity. This is the second major power installation being commissioned by the KSEB under the `100-day action plan' announced by the Government.
C-DIT invites applications
The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), an autonomous institution of the State Government, has invited applications for the next batch of its Post Graduate Diploma in Science and Development Communication course. Graduates in any subject can apply. Seats are reserved for those from the backward and Scheduled communities and women. The selection will be based on a written examination and interview. The application and prospectus can be had directly or by post from the office of the C-DIT at Thiruvallam. The last date for submitting application is November 15.
Theera Surabhi project

. The Theera Surabhi project, aiming at the welfare of the people living in `poramboke' land in coastal villages, will be inaugurated by the Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, on Saturday afternoon at Thoppumpady, the District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, said. The Minister will distribute title deeds to those living in poramboke lands in the fishing villages along the coastal belt at a function to be held at Catholic Centre, Thoppumpady. The beneficiaries of the scheme will be given ration cards, electricity connection and house numbers.
FACT board meeting
The Board of Directors of Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT) will meet on October 18 to consider and take on record the unaudited financial results of the company for the second quarter of the current financial year.
NIT-C programmes
KOZHIKODE

National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) will offer M.Tech. programmes in engineering disciplines and Ph.D. programmes in engineering disciplines, mathematics, chemistry and humanities (English Language Teaching). According to an NIT-C release, admissions to these programmes with scholarship\assistance will be based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science. Candidates can get details of GATE 2005 on the website www.gate.iitm.ac.in and of M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes on www.nit.ac.in
Shibu's body handed over
Thrissur
Oct. 13.
The body of Shibu, who died in police custody, was handed over to his relatives at 12-45 p.m. today. Shibu, 30, and two others were arrested from Viyyur on Monday by the Thrissur Town West police and 3 kg of cannabis seized from them. The post-mortem was conducted at the Government Medical College Hospital in Mulankunnathukavu this morning. In a complaint sent to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, Shibu's relatives alleged police torture and demanded an investigation. In a statement, the CPI(M) district secretary, E. P. Jayarajan, attributed the death to police torture.
Veterinary hospital centenary
The centenary celebrations of the University Veterinary Hospital at Kokkala here will conclude on October 18. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, will take part in the valedictory function. The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, will preside, according to a press release.
Music competition
KANNUR

A State-level competition in Carnatic and Hindustani music will be conducted by the Naimisaranyam Bharatiya Sangeetha Kala Yajnavedi here in connection with its 10th anniversary celebrations. An Yajnavedi press release here today said that the objective of the contest was to honour young Hindustani and Carnatic singers in the State. Artistes in the age group of 15-35 who are interested should apply for registration and application form before October 30 to the managing director, Naimisharanyam, P.O. Edakkad, Kannur - 670663.
Driver robbed
of Rs. 14,000
Thrissur
Oct. 13.
A lorry driver was robbed of Rs.14,000 by a gang of three persons at Chalakudy, near here, this morning, according to the Chalakudy police. The police said Palaniswamy (30) of Pallipalayam complained that the gang had pulled a knife and threatened him while he stopped the lorry (TN-30-E5655) on the national highway around 2 a.m. for rest. The gang snatched the money and ran away, the complaint said. Palaniswamy informed the highway police. The patrol party searched the area, but could not find the gang. The Chalakudy police have registered a case.
Veterinary hospital fete
