KOCHI, OCT. 13. Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed an agreement with Italian shipyard Ficantieri for carrying out the design, integration, installation and commissioning of propulsion system for the air defence ship (ADS) for the Indian Navy, which will cost 22 million Euros. It has also signed an agreement with the Italian firm for consultancy in detailed engineering and documentation at a cost of 6 million Euros. The contract was awarded to Ficantieri after a limited global tender earlier this year in which DCNI, France now known as Armaris, BAe systems, UK and Izar of Spain participated, says a Press Information Bureau release. The air defence 38,000-tonne ship, estimated to cost Rs. 1,700 crores, will take about seven years for completion. Since the aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, will retire in 2010, the Navy is keen on pushing the completion of the ship. The Union Minister for Shipping, T.R. Baalu, will be in Kochi on Thursday and Friday. One of the functions the Minister will attend is at the shipyard where he will formally accept a cheque for the dividend of Rs. 8.34 crores from CSL. According to information available here, the Shipyard wiped out its accumulated losses during 2001-02. The last financial year proved to be an important one for the shipyard as it signed a contract for building a series of big ships for export.
