THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 13. The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to waive the 20 per cent excess fare charged by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) on buses to Sabarimala. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, told reporters after a Cabinet meeting that it had been a long-standing demand of Hindu organisations that the excess fare, charged during the festival season at Sabarimala, should be dropped. The Chief Minister said that the Motor Vehicles Rules permitted charging of excess fare of up to 30 per cent. The excess fare was being charged on the ground that there would be passengers only in one direction during the festival. Now, bus fare per kilometre to Sabarimala would be the same as the rate applicable for other destinations. The Cabinet would consider the financial position and other aspects of functioning of the KSRTC at its next meeting. A consultant had already completed a study on KSRTC, the Chief Minister said.
