THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 13. The Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, today urged the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, to take up with the Tamil Nadu Government the issue of providing urgent medical attention to the jailed the People's Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Abdul Nasir Maudany. In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Kunhalikutty, in his capacity as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) general secretary, asked the Chief Minister to intervene on behalf of Maudany on humanitarian grounds. He wanted the Chief Minister to raise the issue of getting bail for Maudany and to bring all cases against him under the purview of a single court. Mr. Kunhalikutty pointed out that Maudany was suffering from various kinds of ailments such as coronary artery disease, peptic ulcer, lumber disc prolapse, hypertension, cervical sodalities and diabetes. Besides, he was having problems with his spinal cord, owing to the delay in replacing his artificial leg, Mr. Kunhalikutty said. Maudany, one of the accused in the Coimbatore bomb blast case, has been in the Coimbatore jail for the last six-and-a-half years, as an under-trial. Mr. Kunhalikutty's letter is the first official move of the IUML on behalf of Maudany. In the past, the IUML leadership has used the UDF forum to plead his case. The IUML leaders have made demands for Maudany's release, but these demands were in their individual capacity.
Agreement sought
The State unit of the Islamika Panditha Sabha has demanded that the Chief Minister enter into an agreement with the Tamil Nadu Government to release Maudany on bail. The Sabha chairman, Mohammed Salihu, told presspersons here today that the condition of Maudany, who is unwell, has deteriorated and needs urgent medical care. Mr. Chandy should take the lead in making a Government-to-Government agreement to release Maudany on bail from the Coimbatore Central Jail. Maudany is handicapped and is suffering from diabetes, heart disease and ulcer. A Sabha delegation, which visited him at the jail, had found that he had lost weight and that he was being denied medical care, Mr. Salihu said.
Medical care
Mr. Salihu accused the Tamil Nadu Government of harassing Maudany. He had been permitted only to go to the court. Though a medical team had recommended regular clinical investigation and physiotherapy, Maudany was not being given proper care, he alleged. Mr. Salihu said that the Tamil Nadu Government was trying to scuttle the chances of granting bail to Maudany. After completing 90 days in judicial custody, he was eligible for bail, but the Tamil Nadu Government was impeding it. The court had found that many charges, including attempt to murder the jail warden and assault on police officers, levelled against Maudany had been baseless, he said. The treatment meted out to Maudany amounted to violation of human rights. Hence the State Government should take the initiative to release Maudany on bail at the earliest, Mr. Salihu said.
CPI(M) plea
The CPI(M) State secretariat has urged the Government to provide urgent medical care to Maudany. In a statement here today, the CPI(M) leadership said that though the party had been firmly opposed to the ideology and style of functioning of the PDP, it believed that Maudany could not be denied justice and consideration that was due to any person undergoing trial.
