KOLLAM, OCT. 13. An assistant surgeon at the Paravur Kalakode Primary Health Centre (PHC) near here was arrested along with three women by the Paravur police on Tuesday night under the Suppression of Immoral Trafficking Act. All of them were arrested from the Nursing Assistants Quarters attached to the PHC. The surgeon has been identified as Ray Tilak. The women have been identified as Reena George (33), a native of Poonjar, and Manju (27) and Divya(17), natives of Thiruvalla. All the four were remanded to custody for 15 days by the Paravur Munsiff Magistrate court this evening. Local people told the police that they had noticed women who were not attached to the PHC staying in the quarters for the last couple of days and the surgeon frequenting the place. Last night a group of local people tried to barge into the quarters. The women immediately tried to flee through the back door. Following a chase, the local people managed to stop them. By the time they were brought back to the quarters a large crowd led by the Paravur municipal chairman, Sudheer Chellappan, and the Poothakulam grama panchayat president, S. Subash, had gathered there.
Ambulance seized
The local people then searched a private ambulance parked there and found several videocassettes, a VCP and a video camera inside. The police were informed about the development. The local people told the police that the surgeon was engaged in video-graphing pornographic films and selling them. They alleged that the ambulance was used as a mobile studio. The ambulance has been taken into custody by the police. Meanwhile, a medical test conducted on the three women at the Government Victoria Hospital for Women today did not show any signs of cohabitation, according to the report of the medical examiner.
Women's version
In her statement to the police, Reena George said she knew the surgeon since the days he worked at the Poonjar PHC. Divya is a chronic patient and it was to treat her that they arrived at Paravur. Since it was late to return from Kalakode, they were accommodated at the quarters. The women told the police that at night a gang of youngsters tried to barge into the quarters and molest them. When they raised an alarm the surgeon intervened. The gang labelled them as immoral women. The arrests were effected by the Paravur Circle Inspector, M.G. Haridas.
