Voting machines for panchayat polls to be discussed

NEW DELHI, OCT. 13. The possibility of using electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the panchayat elections would be discussed with the Chief Election Commission, the Union Panchayati Raj Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, said here today.

Efforts would also be made to bring about uniformity in the process of conducting elections to the Panchayati Raj institutions after discussions with the States and Union Territories.

Mr. Aiyar was addressing a meeting of the State Election Commissioners on ensuring free and fair panchayat elections.

The two-day meeting discussed issues involving reforms in the election procedures, conducting timely elections, the process of delimitation and reservation.
