THENI, OCT. 13. The Theni Collector, Sunil Paliwal, today disbursed relief to the tune of Rs. 5.45 lakhs to the people affected by Monday's flash flood at Paluthu in Mayiladumparai union. The Collector inspected the damaged houses, the ration shop and the `anganwadi'. He also oversaw the rescue operation and interacted with the affected people. The residents said fertilizer and farm produce, stocked in many houses, were destroyed. Men and women had been struggling to remove soil accumulated in the damaged houses. Mr. Paliwal told presspersons that desilting of the stream had been expedited, and the bunds were strengthened. Ninety worst affected families received Rs.2, 000 in cash, and 276 beneficiaries, whose houses were partially damaged, were given Rs.1, 000 each. As cashew plantations and coconut groves were affected, the Agriculture Department had been advised to assess the crop damage. He said rainwater had washed away the retaining wall of the stream and flooded the village. A 1.060-km-long retaining wall, along the stream, and a ramp at the diversion point of the stream would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.47 lakhs. Already, four-fifths of the villagers had purchased ration goods for this month, and those who purchased the items before the flood could get them again, he said.
