Uproarious scenes at Nagercoil council meet

NAGERCOIL, OCT. 13. A meeting of the Nagercoil municipal council, held here today, witnessed uproarious scenes.

The councillors sat in front of the Chairperson, Meena Dev's chamber, demanding that only Rs.35 a month be collected from the residents for the underground drainage scheme.

Mrs. Meena Dev said it was decided to implement the project at an estimated cost of Rs.74 cores, under the pay-and-use concept. Hence, the municipality decided to collect Rs.23.71 crores from the residents. A sum of Rs. 29.60 crores was to come from the State Government as a grant, and the rest was mopped up from a financial institution. It was decided to collect a deposit of Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 95 a month from the residents, and a deposit of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 225 from commercial establishments.

The municipality also decided to acquire land at Mathusoothanpuram for expanding the composing yard, at an estimated cost of Rs. 60 lakhs, she said.
