Byelections peaceful

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, OCT. 13. Polling in byelections in the Asifnagar and the Siddipet Assembly constituencies today passed off peacefully, barring a few incidents.

Some 35-40 per cent voters exercised their franchise in Asifnagar and between 55 and 60 per cent in Siddipet. Voting was sluggish from the beginning in Asifnagar. In sharp contrast, it was brisk in Siddipet, a predominantly rural constituency. Counting of votes will be undertaken on Saturday and the results announced immediately thereafter.

As voting reached the peak in the afternoon, both constituencies witnessed scuffles and minor clashes. Telugu Desam workers allegedly nabbed their Congress counterparts in Asifnagar and TRS rivals in Siddipet indulged in malpractices. Leaders of different parties met the Chief Electoral Officer, M. Narayana Rao, and complained of malpractices against one another.
