World Standards Day today
CHENNAI OCT. 13. `Standards connect the world' is the theme for the World Standards Day, which falls on October 14. It is also the foundation day of the International Organisation for Standardisation and will be celebrated by the Bureau of Indian Standards here. According to J.T. Davidson, scientist `F' and head (Marks), BIS, Chennai, the day is observed to honour thousands of scientists, engineers and others all over the world who are voluntarily involved in the work for development of standards. To help consumers obtain quality products, the BIS operates a scheme including a product certification marking scheme (ISI- mark), the hallmark scheme for gold jewellery and the management systems certifications (IS/ISO certifications).
RPF constable found dead
CHENNAI OCT. 13. A partially-burnt body of a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable was found near the Katpadi station early this morning. Elumalai (27) was on an escort duty aboard the Chennai Central-Jolarpettai Yelagiri Express last evening. As he failed to report at the Jolarpettai station after the train reached there, RPF officials started a search. They found his cap, service pistol and other personal belongings near the railway track at the Katpadi station and his half-burnt body near the station yard.
AIADMK founding day
CHENNAI OCT. 13. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam today announced that it would mark its 33rd founding day on October 17 by holding public meetings in all cities and towns. All wings and organisations of the party would take part, the propaganda secretary, O.S. Manian, said in a statement.
Parliamentary panel review
CHENNAI OCT. 13. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice will review the functioning of the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA) on October 14 and 15. According to the TNSLSA member-secretary, M. Jeyapaul, the committee, headed by Rajya Sabha member, E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, will interact with non-governmental organisations engaged in legal literacy and awareness programmes, and meet the beneficiaries of legal aid schemes on October 14. It will also evaluate schemes of the Authority implemented during the past three years and see a film on the Lok Adalat, brought out by the TNSLSA. On October 15, the committee members will visit the premises of various NGOs, where legal aid clinics are functioning. Later, they will visit a legal literacy and awareness camp at Egmore and a Satta Udhavi Maiyam on the Madras High Court premises for spot study. The members will also elicit the views of advocates, the general public and others about the Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Bill 2003. The parliamentary committee consists of 10 members from the Rajya Sabha and about 15 from the Lok Sabha.
Training programme
CHENNAI OCT. 11. A training programme for higher secondary school students attempting to crack the IIT-Joint Entrance examination will begin from Vijayadasami day, on October 23. Organised by Aspire learning company, the programme will come in two categories: one targeting aspirants of IIT-JEE 2005 and another, an intensive 18-month intensive course for students who wish to appear for IIT-JEE 2006. While the first course will be held on weekends, the second will be held only on Sundays. Trainers with about 25 years experience in training students for competitive exams will handle all the sessions. Train halt at Vriddhachalam
CHENNAI OCT. 13. Trains 2651/2652 Madurai-Niazamuddin Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Expresses and 2661/2662 Chennai Egmore-Tenkasi Expresses will stop at Vriddhachalam in both directions from October 16, according to a railway release.
Fisherman meets Jayalalithaa
CHENNAI OCT. 13. A fisherman injured in firing by Sri Lankan navy early last month, who was provided medical treatment here at government cost, today met the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and thanked her. Naganathan, was brought to Chennai on Chief Minister's instructions and a surgery was performed to remove a bullet from his throat. The fisherman, who battled for his life after the injury, recovered following the treatment. Today he, accompanied by his wife, met the Chief Minister at the Secretariat. Ms. Jayalalithaa gave them new clothes and a personal gift of Rs.5,000, says a release.
Attayampatti tense
SALEM OCT. 13. Tension prevailed at Attayampatti near here for nearly an hour this morning when a group of villagers and parents locked the front gate of the Attayampatti East Panchayat Union Elementary School to prevent the headmaster taking charge as per Madras High Court orders. The village had remained tense since morning following rumours that the headmaster, Solai (56), who was transferred recently following allegations levelled by teachers and villagers, would resume duty today. Mr. Solai, who was transferred to Ariyagoundampatti, reportedly got his transfer orders quashed by the court. The villagers assembled before the school. But he did not turn up. The police, after removing the lock, permitted the children to attend classes. The District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) K. Vasantha, conducted an enquiry. She told the villagers that court directions could not be violated and the school must function without any disturbance.
Electrocuted
TUTICORIN OCT. 13. A 30-year-old man was electrocuted at a private firm at the SIPCOT Industrial Estate here today. The police said Muthu, a casual labourer of a Bangalore-based construction company, was involved in some mechanical work at the firm when the mishap occurred.
Dies of suffocation
RAMANATHAPURAM OCT. 13. A worker died of suffocation, when he was cleaning a septic tank. Sources said Arumugham, 25, son of Pazhani, belonged to Meenakshipuram in Keelakari, was cleaning a septic tank at Puzhakarai here, when the incident occurred.
Ration cards seized
TIRUNELVELI OCT. 13. Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption today raided a ration shop at Tenkasi and seized cash and 28 ration cards from the salesman. Sources said the shop near the Kaattubhava Middle School, Tenkasi, was selling essential commodities to the cardholders of wards 9 to 16. Following complaints, a DVAC team conducted a surprise check this evening. Besides detecting a huge variation in the stocks, the team seized Rs. 1,300 in unaccounted money and 28 ration cards from the salesman, Kumarasamy (40).
Held for burglary
TIRUNELVELI OCT. 13. The Sivanthipatti police have arrested a man in a case of burglary. The police said Sudalaikannu and two others struck at a house at Aathiparasakthi Nagar in the early hours of September 8 and made away with Rs. 3,000 in cash and 11 sovereigns of gold jewels. Sudalaikannu was remanded to judicial custody.

MADURAI OCT. 13. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today released on bail two men arrested on the charge of setting up an electric fence around their sugarcane field, which caused the death of a female elephant at Shanmugamparai near Palani. The Forest Ranger for Palani Range arrested the duo under the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972, on September 18. In their petition, S. Nithyanandam and T. Varadarajan alleged that the forest officer had filed the case against them with an ulterior motive. They also denied any electrical fencing put up around their fields.
Water level
MADURAI OCT.13. The Periyar dam and Viraganur recorded the highest rainfall of 63 mm and 55.1 mm respectively in the last 24 hours, ended at 8.30 a.m. today. There was widespread rainfall in the Periyar-Vaigai basin. The level in Periyar dam rose by 0.30 feet and stood at 117.40 feet. The inflow was 1, 519 cusecs and the discharge 150 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam was 48.75 feet, with an inflow of 1,396 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar storage was 3,780 mcft.
Killed
ERODE OCT. 13 . Two persons were killed and three injured in a road accident on Tuesday. According to the police, an iron-sheet-laden van proceeding from Erode to Coimbatore overturned near Vijayamangalam when it tried to negotiate a moped that crossed on the National Highway. The van cleaner, Sundar (43) and Anbazhagan (40) in the van were crushed to death on the spot. Three persons on the road waiting for the bus sustained injuries, as the van hit them. The moped rider also sustained minor injuries.

Dharmapuri Oct. 13 . In view of the Tirumala Tirupathi Brahmotsavam festival, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Dharmapuri Division) would operate festival specials through select routes from October 16 to 23. A TNSTC statement issued here today said the special buses would ply from Dharmapuri-Tirupathi at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m, Hosur-Tirupathi at 9.15 a.m. and 8 p.m. and Krishnagiri-Tirupathi at 6 a.m., 10.45 a.m., 1.20 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

SALEM OCT. 13 . The Mobile Family Welfare Consultative camp of the Salem city's All Women Police Station will be held at Annadanapatti Primary School on Kannagi Street here on October 16. Inspector N. Jayam will conduct the camp. Family disputes and dowry problems will be taken up during the camp.

ERODE OCT. 13. Police and Revenue officials jointly raided all the IMFL shops in the district on Tuesday night, following receipt of information that spurious liquor was being sold along with IMFL products in some shops. They examined the stocks kept in the shops.
Constable selection
Thanjavur Oct.13 . Written tests were held for selection of women police constables here today. A total of 1328 candidates from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts wrote the tests. J. Rajendran, Superintendent of Police, said that those who passed in the written tests would be called for medical tests. Thereafter, orders for joining duty would be issued.

PERAMBALUR OCT.13 . The police on Tuesday arrested Anandraj, 21, and seized from him four electrical motors and a couple of two-wheelers stolen by him at different places in and around Perambalur. He was arrested during the course of a regular check-up of vehicles on the Perambalur-Attur highway. He was produced before the Judicial Magistrate, T. T. Harikrishnan, who remanded him to 15 days' judicial custody.
Farmers arrested
NAGAPATTINAM OCT.13. Farmers belonging to the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam and CPI members were today arrested for staging rail and road roko demanding crop loans from cooperatives and commercial banks. Sources said that hundreds of farmers and CPI cadres were taken into custody when they stopped trains at Keevalur, Vaitheeswarankovil, Sirkazhi and Mayiladuturai. They also blocked the road traffic at Maruvathur, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuturai, Thirukuvalai, Thalainayar, Vedaranyam, Tirumarugal, Thanikottagam, Thagattur, Akkur and Vaitheeswarankovil.
Benefits distributed
Thanjavur Oct.13 . The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, today distributed benefits worth Rs.7.24 lakhs to 132 beneficiaries. Participating in a mass contact programme at Vellam Perambur panchayat in Thiruvaiyaru taluk, he said that the road to Vella Perambur, Ammanpettai, Nagathi and Vinnamangalam would be repaired at a cost of Rs.70.60 lakhs. Ayyaru Vandayar, Thiruvaiyaru MLA, P.Rajendran, Project Officer, District Rural Developemnt Agency, participated in the programme.
