Jayalalithaa launches scheme

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, OCT. 13. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today launched a scheme for computerisation of village panchayats. She also inaugurated a sales centre for products made by a women's self-help group at the Secretariat here and a canteen run by the SHG.

The computerisation scheme for all village panchayats was in keeping with the Government's efforts at computerisation of all departments and ushering in e-governance. Under the scheme, 1,113 village panchayats, 385 panchayat unions, 29 district-level offices of the Assistant Director (Panchayats) and the Directorate of Rural Development would be provided with computers.

The first phase will be implemented at a cost of Rs. 10.37 crores, according to an official press note.

To ensure maximum utilisation of the computers, the SHGs too would be allowed to use them. Internet centres (Rural Access to Services through Internet) would be set up in the 1,113 panchayats.

Ms. Jayalalithaa distributed web cameras and accessories to these centres.

Videoconferencing

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a videoconferencing facility, which would serve as a bridge between village-level officers and the district and State administration. This would enable village-level officers to communicate their grievances, without moving out of their village, to higher authorities.

Ms. Jayalalithaa gave away the Chief Minister's Gold Medal for implementation of rural development schemes to N. Muruganandam, former Coimbatore Collector.

The Chief Minister presented a microwave oven to a canteen run by the SHGs. She was later given vegetables grown with organic fertilizers by representatives of the SHGs.
