College to research DNA markers in buffalo

PONDICHERRY, OCT. 13. The Centre's Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has sanctioned Rs. 43.2 lakhs to the Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences to research development of DNA markers in buffalo. The development of infrastructure and also purchase of consumables would be made possible on the basis of the amount sanctioned by the DBT.

The research would include detection of variations in DNA sequence and development of those variations as DNA markers for economically important traits such as milk production, reproduction and disease resistance, according to the Dean of the College, G. Butchaiah.

He said the research work would help the college to identify and multiply superior quality buffaloes. The college had already initiated steps in select area of biotechnology such as establishment of a Biotechnology Research Centre with basic infrastructure, the Dean said.

Advanced research works would be conducted in the wake of the present project available from the DBT. Dr. Butchaiah said that the DBT had given priority to research on functional genomics in farm animals.

PG courses

Dr. Butchaiah said Pondicherry University, to which the college is affiliated, had accorded approval for the introduction of a Master Degree Programme (Master of Veterinary Sciences) in Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Microbiology and Veterinary Pathology from the current academic year.

Of the three seats available in each subject group, two seats would be earmarked for residents of the Union Territory while the third would be available for students from other Union Territories or States.

Selection would be on the basis of entrance test held by the college.
