Negligent doctors `left bandage in stomach'

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, OCT. 13. Health Minister E. Valsaraj has said that a senior JIPMER medical officer would probe a Tindivanam woman patient's complaint that she had received poor treatment at the Government maternity hospital here causing her unbearable pain after she was discharged from the hospital after delivery.

The Administration would take stern action if the doctors or staff were found to be negligent in, he said. Mr. Valsaraj appealed to the doctors and staff in Government hospitals to ensure that no room was given for patients to complain.

The woman patient had complained that she had suffered continued pain even after discharge. A scan taken outside had reportedly shown the presence of gauge cloth in the stomach, allegedly left in the stomach. She later underwent treatment at a hospital in Chennai.

Family to sue doctors

Our Cuddalore Special Correspondent reports:

Thirtyfive-year-old Tharani, wife of R. Solaiappan (35) in Keezhamavilangai village near Tindivanam, was admitted to the labour ward in the Pondicherry hospital on June 7 last. She gave birth to a male child through caesarean section, and simultaneously underwent a tubectomy operation.

According to Mr Solaippan, ever since his wife underwent the operation, she had been complaining of severe pain in the stomach, and the pus had started oozing out of the stitches. She was taken to hospitals at Tindivanam and Villupuram, where doctors told her that they believed there might be a cyst in her stomach.

They had gone back to the Pondicherry hospital for removal of the so-called cyst, but the doctors turned down their request saying the hospital did not have the facility to operate on her cyst.

As the pain grew unbearable, Ms Tharani was admitted to a private hospital at Besant Nagar in Chennai on September 23. During an operation the next day, doctors found a length of bandage cloth in her intestine. The cloth was reportedly entangled in her intestine, causing intense pain. The medical opinion is it that it will take long time for the intestine to heal.

The family members are said to be contemplating suing the doctors in the Pondicherry hospital.
