They bring their dead for protest

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, OCT. 13. Family members and relatives of an employee of Sri Satya Sai Water Supply Scheme, who had committed suicide, along with members of employees' union, staged a dharna on Wednesday with the employee's body in front of the summer storage tank at B.Pappur village in Narpala mandal, where the office is located, demanding ex gratia payment to the bereaved family.

Mallikarjuna (35), who was working as a watchman at the summer storage tank, had attempted suicide by dousing himself with kerosene and torching on October 7, unable to bear the alleged harassment from the management. He was treated at the General Hospital here first and moved later to Kurnool General Hospital, where he died on October 11. His body was brought to B.Pappur on Wednesday.

The employees' union leaders, Bhagavan and Sharfuddin, alleged that Mallikarjuna had committed suicide due to harassment of the scheme officials.

They demanded an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs from the scheme management as Mallikarjuna's family had lost its bread-winner. He is survived by wife, two children and an aged mother.

The protest was continuing through the evening.
