`Heritage Tour' to highlight architecture

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, OCT.13. After the heritage walk, it is now the turn of a heritage tour of Mysore. To help tourists get first-hand knowledge of the "soul of the city," the Dasara Organising Committee has initiated this novel concept to cater to those with a penchant for urban art and architecture.

The Deputy Commissioner, Kumar G. Naik, told presspersons here today that the objective of the tour was to satiate the intellectual requirements of visitors interested in imbibing the local flavour. The tour will commence from the longest surviving mud dwelling near Hinkal on the outskirts of Mysore and will cover a cross-section of urban architecture in the city.

The tour will include a visit to the Nanneshwara temple which is reckoned to be over 450 years. From the temple, the tourists will walk across to the main village street to see "typical village houses" made of earth, timber, bamboo, country tiles, granite floors, etc.

The next destination will be the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion constructed in 1904 and housing a folklore museum and other archaeological findings. The tour will also include visits to Chittaranjan Mahal, now a heritage hotel, and the Chaluvamba Palace that houses the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI). This would be followed by a visit to the residence of Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, former President of India. The tour will take place from October 15 to 20 and will cost Rs. 650 per head.
