BANGALORE, OCT. 13. Energy, an important component of economic growth, has to be efficiently used to "bridge the gap between demand and supply," the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said here on Wednesday. After inaugurating a two-day international workshop on "Standards and labelling for consumer appliances," he stressed the country's energy needs had to keep up with its socio-economic and developmental objectives. Karnataka had quite a few projects on hand the second unit of the 290 mega watt (MW) Alamatti hydel project was ready for commissioning while work on the 1,400 MW combined cycle project in Bidadi was progressing. But, massive increase in generation capacity would not alone meet the developmental needs of a growing economy, especially one that hoped to achieve double-digit annual growth. For that, productivity had to improve and energy costs should come down. "We need to shift our energy policy from a supply-dominated approach to an integrated one comprising investment in capacity addition, efficiency in generation, transmission and distribution, and more end-use efficiency and renewable technologies," he stressed. William Ramsey, Deputy Executive Director, International Energy Agency (IEA), was present. Pradhan, Joint Secretary, Union Ministry of Power; and V.S. Varma, Director General of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), were present. The IEA, the BEE, the Ministry of Power and the Central Power Research Institute are organising the two-workshop at the Le Meridien hotel.
