Uneasy calm prevails in Dyapalapura

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, OCT. 13. An uneasy calm prevailed at Dyapalapura in Salagame hobli of Hassan district today after Tuesday's incident in which a mob set fire to almost all houses.

Except a few women and elderly people, there was no one in the village to provide a clear account of the incident to revenue officials who were assessing the loss of property. The Director-General and Inspector General of Police, S.N. Borkar, visited Dyapalapura and studied the situation.

Parvathamma, a villager who lost her house, said that though the police had tightened security, the men were afraid to return to the village. Telephone and power lines to the village were disconnected, according to her.

Relatives of the villagers who rushed to Dyapalapura on learning about the incident are helping them to salvage property. Many villagers who lost their houses have been forced to leave. However, on learning that the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, former Revenue Minister H.C. Srikantaiah, and the State unit president of Janata Dal (United), B. Somashekar, were visiting Dyapalapura, a few villagers returned by afternoon.

The district administration claimed it had made arrangements for providing shelter to the villagers.

The Deputy Commissioner, K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, said the administration had also supplied food. The loss of property was being assessed. Ninety-five per cent of the houses in the village were destroyed, and plans to rehabilitate the villagers were being made. The Government had directed him to utilise funds available with the district administration, he added

`Don't blame Govt.'

Mr. Srikantaiah said the Government could not be held responsible for the incident as there was no political motive behind the murder or the torching of the village. There was no failure on part of the district police authorities, according to him. He appealed to the Government to take action against those responsible for the incident and rehabilitate the villagers.
