Bomb hoax on SKU campus

ANANTAPUR: Students and staff of Kendriya Vidyalaya, situated on the campus of Sri Krishnadevaraya University near here, had a scary experience today, thanks to a hoax bomb call made by a woman. They heaved a sigh of relief and an unexpected `holiday' after the police search failed to find any explosive material.

Within half-an-hour of the commencement of school hours, the Principal, A.R. Laxmi, received a call from a woman stating that a bomb was planted on the school premises and it would explode anytime. The panic-stricken principal immediately sent the students and staff outside the premises and informed the police. A police team led by the ASI of Itikalapalli police station, Anjaneyulu, searched the premises and found nothing. Students were asked to go home. Later, the in-charge Registrar of SKU, Narasimham, also visited the school.

Fake currency racket busted

RAJAHMUNDRY: The Rajahmundry police have busted a fake currency racket in East Godavari district and arrested a gang of 11 persons from Rayavaram, Gokavaram, Ravulapalem and Anaparthi mandal on the charge of circulating fake currency notes in the district.

The Superintendent of Police, Navin Chand, told reporters at the Rajanagaram police station near here on Wednesday that fake currency notes showing a value of Rs.3.49 lakhs were seized from them. Mr. Navin Chand said four more persons involved in the racket were at large.

Man escapes from prison

ELURU: Shaik Sultan Saheb of Vegivada under the limits of Pedavegi police station limits in West Godavari district has escaped from prison while undergoing a sentence in a murder case. According to the police, the convict came out from the Rajahmundry Central Jail on parole, but failed to report back after expiry of the parole period.

Two farmers commit suicide

KARIMNAGAR: Two farmers committed suicide by consuming pesticides in separate incidents in Gangadhara and Choppadandi mandals on Tuesday night due to failure of crops and increasing debts.

Police sources said that K Rajaiah (35) of Muppidipalli, a hamlet of Sarvareddypalli village of Gangadhara mandal, had debts of Rs. 1 lakh due to failure of cotton crop last year and this season also.

Another farmer J. Odaiah (30) of Chakunta village of Choppadandi mandal also suffered crop failure. He had taken three acres of land on lease and cultivated cotton. Unable to clear Rs. 3 lakhs debt, he committed suicide.

Case filed against sub-registrar

TIRUPATI: Employees of the Sub-Registrar's Office here have filed a case in the East police station against a sub-registrar on the charge that he has taken away some vital documents from office. One of the two sub-registrars had allegedly removed a huge volume containing sensitive documents from the record room while the other was on duty, and slipped out even as the record room-keeper and an attender raised a hue and cry.

Technology to tackle fluorisis

HYDERABAD: The need to tackle fluorosis in Nalgonda district with the use of modern technology was expressed by the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, on Wednesday.

He was interacting with Eli Dahi, Professor of Environmental Engineering from Denmark, Surat Mongkolnchai Arunya of Dental Health Division, Thailand, and A.S. Narayana of the Sai Oral Health Foundation, when they called on him. Prof . Dahi, who invented the Contact Precipitation method of de-fluoridation of drinking water in Tanzania and Kenya, recently visited the district with a team of doctors from Thailand. He had devised three types of de-fluoridators for home, school and community use. The innovations would be given to the community by the administration. A model de-fluoridator for home was shown to Mr. Barnala. The State Bank of Hyderabad had contributed Rs. 4.5 lakhs for the de-fluoridation project in Nalgonda district.

CPI teams for drought-hit areas

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India has decided to depute its leaders to visit 10 drought-affected districts in the State between October 16 and 25 In a statement issued on Wednesday, the CPI secretary, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, said that a three-member team would visit Adilabad on October 16. Different teams would tour Anantapur (October 17), Cuddapah (Octobers 18), Nalgonda (October 20), Warangal and Medak (October 21 and 22), Nellore and Chittoor (October 24 and 25) and Kurnool and Mahabubnagar (October 24 and 25).

Seven-year RI for matricide

NALGONDA: The Third Additional District Judge, B. Vinay Kumar, has sentenced a man to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for killing his mother for misplacing Rs.100.

According to eyewitnesses, Parre Venkateswarlu (40) allegedly detained his mother Chalamanda (70) in her house in Munukuntla village of Kattamgur mandal on November 29, 2003. He beat her up severely inquiring about Rs.100 that he had kept in a box in the house. When she said that she did not know, he hit her hard with a stick. The elderly women died at the district headquarters hospital later.

Weapons seized, two arrested

KURNOOL: The police seized three guns and arrested two persons at Allagadda-Ahobilam cross roads in Kurnool district last night. According to reports, the police carried out extensive raids as part of Blue Fox Operation last night and arrested C. Sekhar and Y. Suranagesh of Harinagar village for possessing three single-barrel muzzle-loaders (SBML). The police also raided the mutka dens and inspected vehicles.

Low pressure moves away from coastal AP

VISAKHAPATNAM: Tuesday's low pressure area over east central Bay is moving in the North-Easterly direction away from coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the Cyclone Warning Centre here on Wednesday evening. Under its influence, rainfall or thundershowers are likely at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours.
