2 sandalwood trees felled in Vandalur Zoo

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 13. Two sandalwood trees have been felled and removed from the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur over the last two weeks.

The first tree was removed about a fortnight ago and the second one is believed to have been cut down yesterday, said highly placed sources. Only the stumps of the trees remained, they said.

Zoo sources said one of the felled trees was 15 years and the other one was at least 20-year-old.

Soon after the first incident, the authorities put up chain link fencing around some of the sandalwood trees in the zoo. Both the felled trees were near the reptile house, the sources said.

Zoo authorities told this newspaper that the felled trees did not have any heartwood, which actually gives value to the sandalwood tree.

This meant that missing trees would not have any commercial value, they said.

A similar incident took place in the Children's Park, Guindy, in March 2002 on World Forestry Day during when a sandalwood tree was cut down. Another tree was felled inside the Guindy National Park during May the same year.

Following these incidents, the Wildlife authorities constructed a wall around another sandalwood tree close to the compound wall of the Guindy National Park on Sardar Patel Road side.
