KANCHEEPURAM, OCT. 13. A residential transit school for dropouts and child labourers set up by a Sweden-based organisation, Hand in Hand (HiH), was inaugurated at Sirukaveripakkam near here today. Declaring open the school building, the HiH president, Per Blomqvist, and chairman, Astra Zeneca, and HiH patron, Percy Barnevik, called upon the children to make the best use of the support offered by the HiH. The organisation would spend Rs. 35 lakhs on this residential transit school project. The Director of School Education, S. Paramasivan, said eradication of child labour formed part of the `sarva sikshya abhiyan' as the main objective of the scheme was to ensure that all children below the age of 7 got the basic education. The HiH chief executive officer, Kalpana Sankar, presented a brief account of the activities in the district and said 22 women out of 55 trained by the organisation in tailoring had been absorbed by a private garment unit in the district. Apart from this, 900 women were guided by the HiH to form themselves into 52 women self-help groups, she added.
