UDUPI, OCT. 13. A. Ramaswamy, Principal Secretary, Department of Cooperatives, on Wednesday, held a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's Office here on the problems plaguing Brahmavar Sugar Factory. He later visited the factory. Mr. Ramaswamy urged the workers of the factory to call off their strike. He told them that until the audit report of the factory was prepared, it would not be possible to seek funds from the Government. The office work of the factory had been pending for the past five months. The workers should allow the sugar in the factory to be transported for sale. He would try to sort out the salary problems of the workers. K. Jayaprakash Hegde, MLA; the Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt; the chairman of the factory, M. Jayasheela Shetty; the Managing Director of SCDCC Bank, Dinakar; and the former Managing Director of the factory, Chandrashekhar Suvarna, were present.
No salary
The workers at the factory have not been paid for the last 22 months. They are on an indefinite dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's Office here since October 1. They said their representatives met Mr. Ramaswamy and he had not given any concrete assurance. Hence they would continue their dharna.
Discussion
Mr. Jayaprakash Hegde told The Hindu that the matter would be discussed at the Chief Minister's level. The district administration would be sending a comprehensive report about the problems faced by the factory. There was no concrete proposal so far for the revival of the factory, he added.
