Meat merchants taking out a procession in Mangalore on Wednesday.
MANGALORE, OCT. 13. An association of meat merchants in the market here has deplored the conditions of trade in the city and elsewhere in Dakshina Kannada and have blamed the Bajrang Dal and other Sangh Parivar for the difficulties faced by them. Members of the association took out a rally and held a protest meeting here on Wednesday. They appealed to the district administration to prevent the Bajrang Dal activists from disparaging the meat trade. Addressing the protestors, Hamid Kandak, general secretary of the Central Market Association, said meat trade was in danger in the district as Bajrang Dal activists were intercepting vehicles carrying livestock to slaughterhouses and beating up the transporters. According to Ali Hasan, president of the association and an office-bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Party city unit, said no day passes without some group heckling the transporters in different parts of the district. Mr. Hasan said the meat stalls in the district had licences issued by the local bodies. The corporation was monitoring the hygiene and health of the livestock in the city. The slaughterhouses and the stalls were disposing of waste material lawfully. The association had lodged complaints against the interception of vehicles. On many occasions, the attackers had robbed the drivers and the contractors of their valuables such as cellphones. The police had given adequate protection, but the menace continued unabated. Mr. Hasan wanted the State Government to intervene in the matter.
