Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, OCT. 13. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) will, in association with the district administration, organise a one-day city consultation workshop on "Earthquake awareness, mitigation and preparedness in Vijayawada city" at the VMC council hall on Friday. The Ministry of Home Affairs of Government of India has initiated a comprehensive disaster risk management (DRM) in 169 multi-hazard-prone districts across 17 select States in the country with the support of UNDP under multi-donor resource framework. The Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project (UEVRP) is a sub-component of the DRM focusing exclusively on the vulnerability of populous urban cities falling in the seismically hazardous zones III, IV and V. As many as 38 cities in the country have been selected under this initiative. The project essentially aims at strengthening the capacities of communities, urban local bodies and the administration in mitigation, preparedness and response in all the 38 cities in the country. As Vijayawada forms part of the 38 cities, there is a greater need to adopt earthquake-hazard reduction measures, adopt proper guidelines for construction of buildings and also generate awareness among the people. The participants would include experts and academicians from key resource institutions, senior government officials, professional organisations, architects, engineers, NGOs, industrialists, representatives of schools and colleges and other stake-holders.
Main objective
The main objective is to constitute City Disaster Management Committee, Emergency Support panel, four task forces -- Awareness generation, training, capacity-building, Earthquake preparedness, Response plan and Techno-legal regime. The goal of the project is to bring about sustainable reduction in the earthquake risk in the quake-prone cities in the country.
