Weather

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 32.7 degree celsius and a minimum of 23.9 degree celsius on Wednesday. Humidity which was recorded at 86 per cent in the morning, remained unaltered at 86 per cent in the evening too.

Commodity prices

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market, according to Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry:

Groundnut oil-54, palmolein oil-42.50, sunflower oil-52.50, tamarind (flower variety)-40 to 48, tamarind (karipuli variety)-55 to 60, chillis-23 to 28, rice (2716)-12, rice super fine-13 to 14, rice (sona masoori)-15 to 16, black gram-22 and red gram-27 to 32.

Power shutdown

The following areas under Mogalrajpuram section will not have power supply from 7 am to 12 noon on Thursday to facilitate reinforcement of conductor. The affected areas include:

MG Road (from AIR to IGMC stadium), police parade grounds, IGMC stadium complex and a part of Giripuram colony.

Free diabetic camp

The Varna Laser - retina eye hospital in the city, plans to conduct a free diabetic retinopathy screening camp on the hospital premises on Thursday.

The camp is being organized in response to a call given by Vision-2020 of Andhra Pradesh's Right to Sight Society, to mark the World Sight Day.

"The move is aimed at creating public awareness on diabetic retinopathy," said C. Manohar of the hospital. The public may get their names enrolled through a contact no.-(0866) 2439190 to attend the camp between 9 am and 2 pm.

Wheel chair

The Life Insurance Corporation city branch manager, Ch. Srinivas Rao, on Wednesday presented a wheel chair to the social welfare hostel for handicapped at Ajitsinghnagar. The presentation was made to mark the LIC's 48th Nationalization Day. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Floor leader, Ch. Babu Rao, also attended the function.

Eye donation

Y. Siva, 6, of Angalakuduru in Tenali mandal and Poori Devi, 68, of Kothapet area in Vijayawada city got their eyesight back, thanks to Abburi Sambasiva Rao, 70, who had donated his eyes to the Swetcha Eye Bank, before his death on October 10. M. N. Raju, transmitted the eyes through cornea -grafting.

MP's visit

The Vijayawada MP, L.Rajagopal, visited the hill-top areas of Christurajpuram, Arulnagar, Vijayanagar colony, Luthnagar, Gunadal as part of his Bapuji Samadarshana yatra. The Kankipadu MLA, Devineni Rajasekhara (Nehru), also accompanied the MP. The latter enquired with the residents about the local problems and assured them all help in their solution.
