Temperature

MADURAI, OCT.13. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 32.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 21.4 degrees Celsius. The Madurai Airport recorded 13 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, ending at 8.30 a.m. today.

Water level

The Periyar dam and Viraganur recorded the highest rainfall of 63 mm and 55.1 mm respectively in the last 24 hours the region, ending at 8.30 a.m. today.

There was widespread rainfall in the Periyar-Vaigai basin.

The level in the Periyar dam rose by 0.30 feet and stood at 117.40 feet. The inflow was 1519 cusecs and the discharge, 150 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 48.75 feet with an inflow of 1396 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar storage was 3780 mcft.

The rainfall registered at other places (in mm) was: Thaniyamangalam - 47, Kallandiri - 43, Andipatti (Theni) - 41.6, Kuppanampatti - 29, Madurai - 28.9, Melur - 28, Chittampatti - 23.5, Peranai - 22.2, Mettupatti - 20, Idayapatti - 15.4, Andipatti (Madurai) and Pulipatti - 15 each, Marudhanadi - 12, Mayiladumparai - 11, Manjalar dam - 8, Sathaiyar dam - 4.4 Tekkadi, Gudalur, Shanmuganadi and Veerapandi - 3 mm each, Vaigai dam and Uthamapalayam - 1 mm each.

Released on bail

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today released on bail two men arrested on a charge of setting up an electric fence around their sugarcane field, which led to the death of a female elephant at Shanmugamparai near Palani, Dindigul district.

The Forest Ranger for Palani Range arrested the duo under the Wild Life Protection Act 1972, on September 18.

In their petition, S. Nithyanandam and T. Varadarajan alleged that the forest officer had filed the case against them with an ulterior motive.

`Bhoomi puja'

A `bhoomi puja' was today performed at the Ellis Nagar playground belonging to the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu for laying a hockey field, a cement basketball court, a volleyball court and a dressing room at a cost of Rs.47 lakhs.

Grievance meet

The Superintending Engineer, Madurai Electricity Distribution Circle, will hold a consumers grievance day meeting from 11.00 a.m. on October 14, at the office of the Assistant Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, South, Melur, according to a release.
