TIRUCHI, OCT 13 . `Food plaza,' a multi-cuisine restaurant, promoted by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited at the Tiruchi Junction, will be commissioned on Friday. Set up on an area of 840 sq ft, the food plaza will offer vegetarian, non-vegetarian (south and north Indian) Chinese and Chettinad dishes, a variety of juices, sweets, bakery products and ice creams. Licensed out to Cochin-based CKK Catering Service, the food plaza is the first of its kind to be set up at the Tiruchi Junction. The Minister of State for Railways R. Velu, will inaugurate the restaurant, which has a ground floor and a mezzanine here on Friday. The IRCTC-promoted food plazas have been set up at Chennai Central, Egmore, Madurai, Trichur and Ernakulam South. A senior railway official told The Hindu today that the idea of setting up food plazas in major railway stations was to provide a variety of quality dishes to the travelling public at moderate prices. Utmost priority had been given to hygiene, installation of modern equipment and ambience in the food plazas. He said there has been heavy demand for quality food in major railway stations and keeping this in mind the food plazas were being established. The food plaza concept had been a success wherever it had been set up, he said adding that the restaurants were making business worth Rs.3 lakh in Chennai Central and around Rs. one lakh at Egmore stations per day respectively. The official said food plazas were being established at Chennai Beach, Chennai Park, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam North, Shoranur and Coimbatore.
