KOCHI, OCT. 13. The scheduled visit of the Union Minister for Shipping and Highways, T. R. Baalu, to Kochi on Thursday and Friday has given a shot in the arm to the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) project and the related development activities that would precede the setting up of the terminal. Mr. Baalu will make a visit to the Cochin Port Trust in the morning and attend a presentation on the activities of the port and its future development plans. The Minister will also visit the project site for the ICTT. Mr. Baalu is scheduled to meet the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, and other Ministers in connection with the National Highway connectivity for the Vallarpadam Island, the site for the proposed ICTT. The Minister's visit comes even as the Port Trust authorities are awaiting the response of the Dubai Ports International on the acceptance of the contract for the ICTT. A Port Trust official said on Wednesday that Dubai Port representatives met officials from the Union Ministry of Shipping in New Delhi on Tuesday to thrash out a course for going about the project. "The discussions were positive and we expect Dubai Port's response by October 16," said the official. The Rs. 2,118-crore ICTT project is part of a total of Rs. 7,400-crore investment planned by the Port authorities over the next five years for the integrated development of the port area. This includes a port-based economic zone and ship repair and bunkering facilities.
