Letters to the Editor
Sir, The United Progressive Alliance Government is planning to extend reservation to the private sector and is also willing to form a commission to provide reservation to the backward among the religious minorities. With the ever-increasing reservation, the non-reserved classes are being pushed to the wall. Deserving youth are being denied jobs. A policy that has failed to deliver the goods all these years must be discontinued.
Ompal Singh Bhati,
Sir, India has been ranked 55, in a list of 104 nations, in the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Index. Even countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Malta, Jordan, Tunisia, Botswana, Mauritius, Namibia, El Salvador and Uruguay are ahead of us. If reservation is introduced in the private sector, we might not figure in the list at all.
R.P. Rammohan,
Sir, The mass of adverse reports on the issue of private sector quotas shows that it is unwelcome. It is obvious that reservation for the weaker sections will not be voluntarily introduced in industry. It has to be imposed.
S. Hembram,
Sir, One has to agree that the weaker sections do not have access to quality education. Reservation at the higher levels of education without providing strong foundations at the primary level serves little purpose.
S. Sudhir Kumar,
