Uniform standard for commodities proposed

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, OCT. 14. The Department of Consumer Affairs has decided to initiate inter-departmental dialogue for organising a national system for a common standard for each commodity, goods and service.

The Bureau of Indian Standards will play a central role in this, being the National Standards Body, the Secretary Department of Consumer Affairs, L. Mansingh, said here today on the occasion of the World Standards Day. This year's theme was "Standards Connects the World".

The Department is also considering evolving a multi-agency approach for introducing mandatory compliance to standards in critical areas affecting public health and safety, which could be enforced by market forces, he informed.
