TIRUMALA, OCT. 14. The nine-day annual Navarathri Brahmotsavam of Lord Venkateswara got off to a colourful start today with the procession of the "Golden Tiruchi" Vahanam this morning. The processional deities of Lord Malayappa Swamy, flanked by his two consorts on either side and mounted atop the `Golden Tiruchi,' were taken out in a grand procession along the Mada streets, encircling the holy shrine and signalling the commencement of the nine-day fete.
Grand procession
Earlier, special rituals like Ekantha Thirumanjanam to the processional deities was observed at the Ranganayakula Mandapam, situated inside the temple complex, followed by Koluvu and Panchanga Sravanam. Later in the evening, the processional deities mounted atop the Golden "Pedda Sesha Vahanam" were brought out in a colourful procession. Thousands of devotees congregated along the Mada streets to witness the grand procession, which was headed by half a dozen temple elephants, horses, bulls and scores of bhajan and dance troops specially commissioned for the purpose from the neighbouring states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, besides a big contingent of Vedic pundits headed by the TTD jeers. The first day's festival concluded with the Navarathri Koluvu and Asthanam performed inside the temple in the night.
