HYDERABAD, OCT. 14. The Osmania University Vice-Chancellor, J. Anantha Swamy, 54, passed away on Thursday at Mediciti Hospital. He was being treated for the last 12 days for acute respiratory complications. He is survived by wife, son and daughter. The body was brought to his official residence in the university and kept for the teachers, students and employees to pay their last respects. A large number of teachers, students and non-teaching staff of the university turned up at the VC's lodge to pay homage. The funeral will take place at Bansilalpet crematorium at 12.30 p.m. on Friday. The university has decided to close all the colleges and offices of Osmania University on Friday as a mark of respect. However, all the university examinations including the P.G. supplementary would be held as scheduled.
Brilliant career
<167,2p,1>A brilliant student throughout his school and college life, Prof. Swamy joined the university service as a lecturer in 1974 in the Department of Chemistry after completing his post-doctoral research from the University of Oklahoma, USA. He became a professor in 1989. He held various administrative assignments in the university such as Principal, P.G. College, Mirzapur, and P.G. College, Secunderabad; Director, District P.G. Colleges; Dean, College Development Council and Member, Executive Council. He took over as the Vice-Chancellor on August 29, 2002. The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, and the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, expressed shock and grief over the sudden death of Prof. Swamy. In a condolence message, Mr. Barnala recalled the sober and soft-spoken Prof. Swamy and said that in his death the university had lost a brilliant academician and inspiring teacher. Dr. Reddy, in his condolence message, said that Prof. Anantha Swamy rendered yeoman service to promote higher education of the best standards. The Minister for Minorities Welfare, Mohd. Fareeduddin, expressed shock over the death. The University Registrar, M. Mutha Reddy expressed deep shock over the sudden death. The Osmania University Teachers' Association (OUTA) and the Andhra Pradesh Federation of University Teachers' Associations (APFUTA), the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad State secretary, V. Narender, and the Federation of A.P. Minority Educational Institutions condoled the death.
