Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 14 . The anti-liquor commission of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference has strongly condemned the newly announced liquor policy of the Government as being violative of all previous assurances to the commission and "anti-people." In a statement here, the Archbishop of the Thiruvananthapuram Diocese and commission chairman, M. Soosapakiam, said it was ironical that the UDF Government had come into power with the promise that its ultimate aim was prohibition and that the same would be introduced in a phased manner. As a result of the new policy, liquor would flow freely in the State, he said. The proposal to introduce canned toddy was aimed at pleasing the abkari lobby. The Government would have to answer for the sufferings and tears of lakhs of mothers and children in the State as a result of the policy. The UDF was mistaken if it thought that the new policy would help it to come back to power in a State which was reputed to have a "liquor culture," the archbishop said. He urged the Government to correct its "mistake" without delay.
