THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 14 . Panic gripped the pilgrims who thronged the Sri Padmanabha Swamy temple for the Navaratri festival this morning when a woman, suspected to be mentally deranged, grappled with priests and temple staff in her bid to force her way into the sanctum sanctorum. The incident occurred at 10.30 a.m. when the `Kalasa Pooja' was on at the mandapam in front of the deity. The woman who was accompanied by her mother and brother suddenly broke off from the crowd near the Narasimha Moorthy temple and scaled the barriers to the mandapam, shoving aside a priest. Flailing around in a fit of frenzy, she kicked the gold plates on the pillars and bit her brother's arm. Defying attempts by other pilgrims to restrain her, she sprinted towards the sanctum sanctorum and grappled with the main priest who cried for help. It took four security staff to overpower her. The woman, identified as Sajina, hailing from Vizhinjam, was handed over to the police.. Police said she was later referred to hospital. The morning poojas at the temple, which started at 4 a.m., had to be rescheduled after a purification ceremony. As a result, the Ucha Seeveli was completed only by 6.30 p.m.
