BANGALORE, OCT. 14. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on Thursday increased its bus fares by 4.5 per cent. But the stage-wise fare increase will not be more than one rupee, according to the transport corporation's Managing Director, Upendra Tripathi. Up to two kilometres, there will be no change in the minimum fare of the BMTC's city, sub-urban and Pushpak services. The fare increase will also not apply to the 1st, 3rd and 4th stages of the city services and the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 16th and 17th stages of sub-urban services. Mr. Tripathi quoted the steep increase in diesel prices and the increase in dearness allowance announced by the Government to its employees as reasons for the increase in bus fares. "It has become inevitable to revise the bus fares to keep up the growth rate and quality of the BMTC fleet and services and sustain it," he said.
Uniform fare
The BMTC fixed a uniform fare of Rs. 25 for a daily pass for the benefit of frequent travellers. Passengers with a daily pass could now board black board, red board or Pushpak service. Earlier, the daily passes for black board and red board buses cost Rs. 20 and for Pushpak services Rs. 30.
