This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru has expressed the view that it is essential for the peace not only of Asia but of the world that two great countries like India and China should understand each other and have friendly relations. Addressing a press conference in Calcutta soon after his arrival there on October 15, he said, "I am going to China with no set purpose but chiefly to pay a friendly visit to that great country." The Prime Minister was received at the Dum Dum airport by West Bengal's Chief Minister, Dr. B.C. Roy. As he was being escorted to the car by Dr. Roy, the Prime Minister told a reporter, "I am all right." At the Raj Bhavan, where he drove straight, Dr. Roy examined the Prime Minister before they sat for lunch. Mr. Nehru will resume his journey to China on October 16 morning. Dr. Roy received the report of Mr. Nehru's indisposition on October 14 and he cancelled all public engagements for the Prime Minister. Dr. Roy did not allow Mr. Nehru to be in the sun for a long time at the airport. Within three minutes he got the Prime Minister inside the waiting car, finishing the presentation of his Cabinet Ministers and others to the Prime Minister. When reporters approached him, Dr. Roy intervened and said, "Nothing now. If possible he will see you in the evening".
