This Day That Age
The Congress General Secretary, Mr. Balwantrai Mehta, said in Colombo on October 15 that Prime Minister Nehru's proposal to retire from active politics for some time was possibly meant to give "a shock treatment" to the people of India and shake them out of any complacency. He said he, therefore, welcomed it as a proposal which had set the minds of the people thinking. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Mehta said: "Mr. Nehru will be the last person to see that his countrymen are wedded to a person or personality rather than to a cause or machinery to achieve that cause. So he has possibly given a shock treatment so that any complacency that may be found in any part in India will be shaken off and the people may think in terms of their duties and responsibilities. One cannot deny him a period of rest if he wants it in view of the terrible responsibilities he has been shouldering for the past several years and more. And I am sure the country will, with one voice, refuse to accept the position that it can do without him for a long period."
