Salem
By Our Special Correspondent
SALEM, OCT. 15. Salem district farmers thanked the administration for removing the encroachments from the Panamarathupatti Lake near Salem and urged the Collector to retrieve all such tanks and water spreads in the district from the clutches of encroachers. Participating in the grievances day meeting here today, the farmers said that the alarming depletion of ground water level in the district was mainly due to the encroachments on the water spreads such as tanks and ponds and water carrying channels, which in turn affected the farmers very badly.
Sub-standard eggs
The representatives of various farmers' fora said that the quality of noon meals and the eggs being served in Veeranam schools were sub-standard. They urged the Collector to initiate immediate steps to rectify the shortcoming. A few also complained that a wild animal continued to kill their cattle heads, particularly the sheep and goats in Kollapatti village. The Collector, A. Sukumaran, who presided over the meeting, asked the officials concerned to take appropriate action. He also assured the farmers that all encroachments in tanks and ponds in the district would be removed. He also asked the officials to inform him within 15 days about the action taken on the grievances of the farmers.
`Pattas' distributed
A sum of Rs. 32 lakh has been earmarked for providing basic amenities to the habitations of tribals and dalits in the district. Disclosing this here at the Adi dravidar welfare council meeting, the Collector said that the Government had allotted Rs. 32 lakh for providing basic facilities for their habitations such as drinking water, roads, burial grounds, group houses etc. He also said that house `pattas' would be distributed to the dalits who did not have any in the villages of Sankagiri taluk. These `pattas' would be distributed within a week's time.
Vacancies in schools
Mr. Sukumaran pointed out that vacancies existing in the schools of Adi dravidars and tribals would soon be filled up. He also asked the officials to monitor the job reservation for dalits and tribals in private firms in the district and asked the officials to take necessary action to tone up the performance of the district's residential tribal and Adi dravidar schools. Sports activities among them should also be encouraged, he said.
