Taipei (Taiwan): The strongest quake to hit Taiwan in five years shook the capital on Friday, causing tall buildings to sway and shutting down the subway system for an hour during the lunch rush. No serious damage or injuries were immediately reported. The magnitude 7 quake's epicentre was in the Pacific Ocean, about 110 km from the east coast harbour city of Su'ao, the Central Weather Bureau said. Although the quake's epicentre was about 260 km from the capital, Taipei, the tremor gently rocked buildings in the city for about a minute. The quake caused Taipei's sidewalks to shake slightly as if a train were rumbling under the walkways. ``The quake first moved up and down and then left to right,'' said Kuo Kai-wen, a weather bureau official. The movement was typical for a tremor with an epicentre located far away.
