Kher's sacking

Sir, — The removal of Anupam Kher as Chairman, Central Board of Film Certification, is shocking. The use of words such as `detoxification' by the Left only divides us further.

Incidents such as the removal of Mr. Kher become precedents for other dispensations to follow when their time comes. This is uncalled for in a democratic society.

Sir, — The Left has been consistently campaigning against the saffronisation of all institutions. And it is a fact that the NDA had installed persons belonging to the Parivar in crucial positions in almost all academic and cultural institutions. More than the credentials of Mr. Kher, the fact that it was the NDA Government that appointed him CBFC chairman evokes apprehension.

Salem, T.N.

Sir, — I am amazed at Mr. Kher's charges against the CPI (M) leader, Harkishan Singh Surjeet. Mr. Surjeet's article in People's Democracy only lists the names of persons closely associated with the Hindutva forces, who hold key positions in many government bodies. What is wrong in a secular Government at the Centre desaffronising our institutions?

R. Dharmalingam,
Salem, T.N.

Sir, — The controversy caused by the removal of Mr. Kher is unnecessary as it has no bearing on his merits. It is normal for ruling parties to nominate persons of their choice to several offices. These positions are neither open to the general public nor advertised to select the most talented candidate. Those holding such offices should ideally relinquish them when there is a change of government.

J.M. Manchanda,
New Delhi
