Alappuzha
By Our Staff Reporter
ALAPPUZHA, OCT. 15. The State Government would modernise the offices of the Motor Vehicles Department soon, the Transport Minister, N. Sakthan, said today. Addressing a meet-the-press programme at Alappuzha Press Club, Mr. Sakthan said the Government would take steps to computerise the offices of the department in the near future. The previous Government had appointed an 11-member committee to look into the matter and it was expected to submit its report shortly. He said a help line service would be started at the department offices. The Transport Commissioner had been directed to conduct Adalats at all the district headquarters to solve the grievances of the public relating to the department. The Government's aim was to ensure transparency and to avoid delay, he said. Mr. Sakthan said the Government would take a sympathetic attitude in the issue of providing compensation to victims of the Kumarakom boat tragedy which occurred in 2002. The recommendation for providing compensation would be submitted to the approval of the Cabinet.
New boats
The Water Transport Department would introduce 21 new boats in this year. Of these, 11 would be steel boats and 10 would be fibre boats, he said. The Minister said he had given orders to the KSRTC to operate all existing schedules which had been non-operational. As many as 100 non-operational schedules had been restarted in Thiruvananthapuram district alone. Twenty-five new schedules would be restarted in Alappuzha district in the coming week. Orders had also been issued to restart all night services which had been stopped.
KSRTC sub-depots
Mr. Sakthan said he would revoke the order of the previous Government which degraded 12 sub-depots of the KSRTC. The status of six sub-depots had already been revived, he said. He had given orders today to revive the Haripad sub-depot which had been degraded. An assistant transport officer would be appointed there soon. The Minister said the Government would take steps to fill the vacancies in the KSRTC. The PSC had been already informed about vacancies. Earlier, the Minister took part in a meeting of KSRTC officials which reviewed the functioning of various units of the Corporation in the district. He later called on the SNDP Yogam general secretary, Vellappally Natesan, at his residence at Kanichukulangara.
