Plan to train SHG members in herbal cultivation

PERAMBALUR, OCT. 15. The Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women (Mahalir Thittam) plans to train self-help group members in the district in herbal cultivation, the District Revenue Officer, V. Krishnamurthy, has said.

Speaking at a function got up here today to distribute certificates to those who had completed vocational training, he said herbal cultivation was fast becoming a promising trade, with a vast extent of land being brought under various medicinal crops.

He said the Mahalir Thittam was considering a plan for training SHG members in herbal cultivation. Those familiar with herbal cultivation would be selected and trained in modern crop management techniques. The modalities were being worked out.

He said 7,800 women had so far undergone vocational training under a five-year programme. The aim was to cover 9, 500 beneficiaries.

The Mahalir Thittam Project Officer, Saraswathy Ganesan, said a number of rural women had inherited from their forefathers a sound knowledge of the efficacy of herbal plants and shrubs. Yet, they still remained poor.

Mr. Krishnamurthy later inspected the construction of a stadium at Ariyalur. He asked the officials to complete the work as per schedule.

He said the work was being executed on an outlay of Rs.68 lakhs.
