SRIVILLIPUTTUR, OCT. 15. The Chief Judicial Magistrate, T.V. Chandrababu, on Thursday sentenced a Revenue Inspector, Thanam, to one-year imprisonment. Mr. Thanam was accused of demanding bribe from a group of persons for clearing files giving them free land pattas in Virudhunagar in 1993. According to the prosecution, Mr. Thanam had demanded Rs. 350 each from 100 persons for clearing files on provision of free land pattas given by the Department of Adi Dravidar Welfare. Following a complaint filed by Peter, one of the persons from whom the bribe was demanded, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption laid a trap and caught Thanam while receiving bribe money of Rs.7000 in 1993. The Magistrate also imposed a fine of Rs. 6000. However, a Special Tahsildar, who was also accused in the case, was acquitted.
