Ryots' pat for Collector

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, OCT. 15. The Walajah Lake Ayacutdars' Welfare Association (Walajah Eri Paasana Vivasayigal Nala Sangham) today felicitated Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi for having solved the problems facing the lake for over three decades with a citation and shawl.

The president and secretary of the Association, P.C.S. Krishnan and S.Ramanujam, noted that ever since 1972, the lake remained neglected, with its weak bunds developing breaches at many places time and again.

The lake spread over 1,473 acres was meeting the irrigation needs of 12,000 acres. But, encroachers had grabbed most parts of it. After Mr. Bedi took over, he had strengthened the bunds for 10 km radius at a cost of Rs 20 lakhs, and removed the encroachments.

The Association also congratulated the Collector for having taken steps to cleanse the polluted Paravanaru in coordination with the Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

The Association thanked the Personal Assistant to Collector (Agriculture), K. Ilango, Project Officer of the District Rural Development Agency, Jagannathan, and others for their cooperation.

The Collector said he and the officials had only done their duty and therefore they need not be felicitated. However, respecting their sensitivities he had accepted the felicitation, he said, calling upon the farmers to desist from doing so in future.
