Cabinet approves transfer of Population Commission
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
OCT. 15.
The Union Cabinet has approved the transfer of the National Commission on Population from the Planning Commission to the Department of Family Welfare in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The Prime Minister will continue to head the Commission. A Convergence Policy Group, with the Deputy Chairman as its chief, would be formed in the Planning Commission for inter-sectoral convergence of family welfare programmes.
The Cabinet also decided that the administration of the `Janasankhya Sthirata Kosh' (Population Stabilisation Fund), which has a corpus of Rs. 100 crores, be reconstituted. The Fund, which came under the Department of Family Welfare, would now be managed by the Minister for Health and Family Welfare.
"Since the Department of Family Welfare is the nodal department for activities concerning population stabilisation, and the mandate of the Commission is to monitor and review these activities, the proposed modalities would improve inter-sectoral convergence and also contribute to attainment of goals of the National Population Policy, 2000. The proposed activities would be completed in three months," the Ministry's proposal said.
