Assam to reciprocate ceasefire offer
By Sushanta Talukdar
GUWAHATI,
OCT. 15.
The Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, today said that the State Government would reciprocate the ceasefire offer of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) once the formal ceasefire agreement was signed with the Centre and the ground rules were laid down.
Even as the Government and the NDFB moved towards a formal ceasefire agreement, suspected militants of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) today made an unsuccessful bid to blow up the Guwahati Telephone exchange when the police chiefs of the northeastern States were chalking out counter-insurgency plans at the two-day annual conference held at the Assam Police headquarters.
Police said security personnel manning the exchange had become suspicious of a person loitering near the entrance and three detonators were recovered from him when he was checked. He was taken into custody and he said during interrogation that three suspected ULFA militants had handed the detonators to him, asked him to take them inside the exchange, and wait for them to bring the explosives for blowing up the exchange.
