Fishermen continue strike

NAGAPATTINAM OCT. 15. The strike by more than 3,000 fishermen of Nagapattinam taluk condemning the alleged atrocities against Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy entered fifth day today.

However, those having small motorboats and catamarans ventured into the sea for fishing.

Throws children into well

VIRUDHUNAGAR OCT. 15. A woman threw her three children, including a six-month-old infant, into a well at Mallankinaru near Aruppukottai last evening.

According to the police, Perumalakka (37) confessed to having thrown Ramu (4), Priya (2) and Chithra (six months) into the well in the Valayankulam tank following domestic quarrel. The Mallankinaru police arrested her.

Temple hundi tampered with

CUDDALORE Oct. 15. A hundi in front of the sanctum sanctorum of the Vriddhagiriswarar temple at Vriddhachalam, near here, was found tampered with, with its lock broken and small coins scattered all over.

It is suspected that the culprits might have taken away only currency notes from the hundi, leaving the coins. The priests noticed the theft soon after opening the temple for the day. Immediately they informed the Executive Officer, Nambirajan, who in turn alerted the police. Forensic experts lifted fingerprints.

It is believed that the thieves could have gained entry by climbing over the western wall. There are nine hundis in the temple, and the authorities collect the offerings once in two months.

Farmer leaders acquitted

Coimbatore Oct. 15. The judicial magistrate III, R. Sujatha, today acquitted leaders of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangham in a case relating to the alleged attempt to cause breach of public peace and tranquillity.

According to the police, the State president, M.R. Sivasamy, the district president, Vazhukkuparai Balu, and the State treasurer, Venkatachalam, addressed a public meeting at VOC Park here on October 24, 2002. The police registered cases against them on charges of endangering public peace and tranquillity. Observing that the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt, the magistrate acquitted all the three.

Forged visas: 2 Sri Lankans held

Nedumbassery (Kerala) OCT. 15. Emigration officials at the Cochin International Airport yesterday detained two Sri Lankans on the charge of possessing forged visas.

Suranka Pradeep Kumara (27) and Thushara Damayanti (24) were detained when they came to board a Qatar Airways flight. They were to travel to Italy via Doha.

Officials expressed reservations about their claim that they were married.

They came to India on October 1 and had been in Chennai since then. The passports and visas they used to travel to India were genuine. However, discrepancies were detected in the visas meant for their Italy visit. The stamping on the visas for previous Italy visits was also found forged.

In a similar incident reported from the Nedumbassery airport in August, a couple, pretending to be husband and wife, were detained as they attempted to fly to Italy via Kuwait. Their visas were found forged.

Additions to cradle baby centre

Dharmapuri Oct.15. Two newborn female babies were handed over to the Cradle Baby Centre at the Dharmapuri General Hospital here yesterday. Farm labourers Indirani and Dharman of Palacode, who already have three daughters, handed over their fourth female child to the centre.

Similarly, Ananthi and Sakthivel of Krishnagiri handed over their fourth female child to the centre.

Assumes charge

CHENNAI OCT. 15. R. Balasubramanian has taken charge as the secretary of the Animal Welfare Board of India.

This veterinarian gynaecologist started his career in the Remount and Veterinary Corps in the Army. He worked as research officer with the Defence Research and Development Organisation at Leh, Ladakh. He has served for more than 30 years in the fields of animal care, research and development, particularly animal breeding, says a release.

New moon sighted

CHENNAI OCT. 15. The c hief kazi to the Government of Tamil Nadu, Mufti Kazi Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub, informs that the New Moon for the month of Ramzan was sighted in Erode and Tiruchi on October 15.

Therefore the month of Ramzan (fasting) will begin on Saturday, October 16, according to a release.

Council for film subsidy

CHENNAI OCT. 15. While welcoming the announcement that State film awards will be given away on November 1, the Tamil Film Producers' Council has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to provide subsidy to films made between 2000 and 2002.

The president, K. Muralidharan, in a statement, sought Ms. Jayalalithaa's intervention to help the producers in the context of the coming Deepavali.

`Sadhaya vizha' from Oct.23

THANJAVUR OCT. 15. Arrangements are being made to celebrate the `sadhaya vizha', the birthday celebrations of King Raja Raja Cholan, here on October 23 and 24, the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, said today.

He held discussions with officials and the Sadhaya Vizha Committee chairman, K. Thangamuthu, on the preparations being made for the festival.

He said the parking lot for cars was being expanded, and the moat cleaned at a cost of Rs. 2 lakhs.

Mr. Thangamuthu sought the cooperation of people to make the festival a success.

Cassette released

KARAIKAL OCT. 15. An audiocassette on `History of Pondicherry' was released by the Minister for Education and Tourism, K. Lakshminarayanan, at the Pondicherry golden jubilee function celebrated by K.M.K.Kannaiya Pillai Memorial School here on Thursday.

The cassette was prepared by Arivazhaghi, headmistress of the school.

The Minister presented the first cassette to the founder, Manimegalai Kannaiyan.

A number of freedom fighters were honoured.

TIRUCHI OCT. 15. The level in the Mettur dam stood at 80.96 feet today.

The inflow was 18, 473 cusecs, and the discharge 14,009 cusecs.

ASP assumes office

Tuticorin Oct.15. Kapilkumar Saratkar Chindurio (26) today took charge as the Additional Superintendent of Police at the Maniyachi sub-division in the district.

Belonging to the 2002 batch of the Indian Police Service, Mr. Kapilkumar had served as the ASP (trainee) at Sankarankoil and Ambasamudram, prior to the present appointment.

Lightning kills woman

Tuticorin Oct.15. Krishnammal (37) was struck dead by lightning and two others were injured when they were engaged in farming activities near Ettayapuram near here on Thursday evening.

The police said while Krishnammal died on the spot, Annamuthu and Velammal were admitted to the Ettayapuram Government Hospital.

Chain snatched

Tirunelveli Oct.15. The Melapalayam police are on the lookout for some persons who snatched a chain from a woman.

The police said they snatched the chain, weighing five sovereigns, from S. Petchiyammal of Kamaraj Nagar under the Melapalayam police station limits on Wednesday when she was sleeping in her house.

Based on a complaint from Petchiyammal, the police have registered a case.

Woman, daughter commit suicide

ERODE OCT.15. A mother and a daughter committed suicide at Mettukattupalayam near Modakurichi. According to police, frustration in life was stated to be the reason. The woman Pavathal, a widow, and her daughter Annapoorani doused kerosene over their bodies. They were charred to death on the spot. The fire also spread to the hut. The Modakurichi police and Fire and Rescue service personnel rushed to spot recovered the two bodies. Further investigation is in on.

Special school

SALEM OCT 15. To retain the rescued child labourers of coir industry of Tiruvakoundanur in schools, the Department of Labour in association with the Society for Monitoring and Implementation of Child labour Elimination opened a school itself at Tiruvakoundanur village near here today.

According to the Inspector of Labour, G. Mahalingam, the special school, 31st in the district will enrol all the 30 children who were rescued from the coir industry during a raid in the village recently.

Renewal of arms licence

ERODE OCT.15. All the licences granted by the Collector and the Revenue Divisional Officer for possession of revolvers, pistols, rifle, DBBL, SBBL guns and SBML guns should be renewed from January 1, 2005, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, today. He said all the licensees should apply for renewal in the prescribed form on or before December 31, to avoid action against the defaulters.

Seized

Krishnagiri Oct.15. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel seized 3,000 packets of illicit distilled arrack worth Rs.30, 000 at Hosur here yesterday. According to the police, a team was involved in vehicular checks on Hosur Kakkanur Road when they intercepted a car and seized the arrack. One person was arrested in this connection.
