CHENNAI, OCT. 15. The former DMK Minister, Ponmudi, and seven others, charged with forging documents and grabbing a government land at Saidapet, appeared before III Additional Sessions Judge here today. The charge sheet copies in the case, however, could not be served on them as one accused was absent. The judge, Ramalingam, then posted the matter to November 16. According to the prosecution, which filed the charge sheet on September 2, Mr. Ponmudi, with the aid of a former DMK MLA from Saidapet, Kittu; a DMK Municipal Councillor, I. Kennedy; and a Sub-Registrar at Adyar, Puru Babu, grabbed a 3,630-square feet plot at Sri Nagar Colony at Saidapet, causing over Rs. 25 lakhs loss to the Government. It was then registered in the name of Mr. Ponmudi's mother-in-law, Saraswathi, and a building was also constructed there. The first information report was registered in August 2003 against five accused, including Mr. Ponmudi. Five more accused were included during the course of the investigation. The charges against them include creation of forged documents and causing loss to the Government. The charge sheet lists 153 prosecution witnesses and 160 documents, and runs to 3,000 pages.
