CHENNAI, OCT. 15. The district mental health programme will soon be extended to Theni and Kanyakumari, Health Minister Thalavai Sundaram, said today. The programme, now in operation in Madurai, Ramanathapuram and Tiruchi, would be extended to the two districts to take mental health care to the doorsteps of patients. Mr. Sundaram said there was also a proposal to start psychiatric wards in government medical college hospitals and upgrade the infrastructure in the hospitals where they already existed. Eventually, all districts would have a mental health programme in place.
A model State
Speaking at the inaugural of the 37th annual conference, IPSPCON 2004, of the Indian Psychiatric Society South Zone here, Mr. Sundaram pointed out the insufficiency of psychiatrists in the country, where one per cent of the population was severely mentally ill and another 15 per cent suffered from other minor, common mental illnesses. The IPS-south Zone president, N.V. Ramana Rao, said the conference, on the theme "Developing Research and Managed Health Care," would provide psychiatrists a platform to discuss new research methodologies and present papers on path-breaking research in mental health care done in the country. The president-elect, IPS, S. Nambi, said recent efforts by the Tamil Nadu Government in mental health care were progressive and the tempo of activity must continue.
