NEW DELHI, OCT. 15. Alleging that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's staff and contractors have swindled crores of rupees, the Bharatiya Janata Party Councillor from Rohini, Vijender Kumar Gupta, has demanded an inquiry into the arbitration award payments. In a statement, Mr. Gupta, who is a member of the Standing Committee, said the MCD in the past three years has paid Rs. 6.75 crores to the civic contractors in compliance with the arbitration of 34 cases. Stating that not a single case during the same period had been awarded to the civic body, Mr. Gupta alleged that only the interest of the contractors were safeguarded by the municipal employees. While finalising the case of extension of time for them and the lapses on their part during the stipulated or the extended period of completion of work was generally not argued or presented before the arbitrator, he charged. Mr. Gupta alleged that the MCD employees have adopted a simple modus operandi to favour the contractors. "No timely action against the contractors is taken for non-commencement, not finishing in time or slow progress during execution of work, though the decision of the superintending engineer for payment of compensation by the contractor is final resulting in arbitration awards against the MCD," he said.
